What is my purpose?
I’m sure all of us at some point in our lives would have asked ourselves this question sometimes even on a frequent basis, if you are like me. I keep asking myself this question all the time.
Sometimes I even get so obsessed about changing the world and wanting to make a difference that I tend to lose focus on the Creator and turn to the created things (frantic searching on the Internet, Youtube videos, Blog Posts, etc. ).
That’s when I hear God speaking to me saying,
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. – 1 John 2:15-17
Yes, even good desires like wanting to change the world and wanting to make a difference can turn into an obsession making you shift your focus from God and dwell in worry of the future, cause confusion and discontentment with your present. All these are emotions and burdens my God doesn’t want me to carry.
But, Is it wrong wanting to know my purpose?
Of course not. We are all created for a reason and the best thing in life is to live out our unique purposes, whatever we were put here on earth for.
Even God wants that from you that’s why He made you. But that doesn’t mean I take the focus off of Him and rather try to figure out my purpose on my own.
Who else can better tell me my purpose than my Creator Himself? So that means I seek Him for knowing my purpose. I have to seek His guidance by placing my faith in Him.
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. – Hebrews 11:6
When I spend more time researching and trying to figure out my purpose by myself instead of asking God to guide me, then I’m bound to get overwhelmed and confused and doubtful and whatnot.
In prayer, I always find a peace even when I don’t have an answer, and sometimes God even replies directly giving me the exact reply to my question.
Sometimes He replies in stages.
Sometimes He wants me to learn the hard way, that is, by failing and getting back up again.
Sometimes He makes me wait,….
…..sometimes He makes wait really really long and that’s worse, but I know I can trust Him because ultimately it always turns out for my best.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28
If I don’t receive an answer right away I need to wait patiently for His timing and provision. Again, that’s placing my faith completely in Him.
When you place your faith in Him, it means you are going to trust Him regardless of your present despair and even if you see no light at the end of the tunnel and hear no answer, you still place your hope and confidence in Him.
But one thing I know for sure, God promises me this,
Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in Me will not be disappointed. – Isaiah 49 :23b
I thank and praise God for always correcting my path when I tend to waiver.
Sometimes it not about finding that one purpose ….
sometimes whats more valuable is the journey you take while you move towards your purpose.
…yes there may be setbacks but then you will see God’s care,
yes there will be doubts then you will see God’s nuture,
yes there will be confusion then you will learn to rely on God’s peace,
yes there will be discontentment then you will learn to be grateful of whatever He has given you in the past and all the blessing you are currently overlooking
…and yes there will be disppointment but then you will learn to stop controlling everything yourself and start submitting yourselves to God and as you lean onto Him You will see His love power might and glory in your life.
Trust me, no purpose is greater than feeling the Creator’s presence and love in our lives. As He breaks through our situation and carries us through our difficulties, you will feel so much care and love and satisfaction and protection that nothing in this world can ever provide you.
Trust me , I have felt it and it blows my mind.
God chose YOU!
During these times of waiting and hoping He teaches me virtues and values and builds me up and develops my character making me ready for my purpose; kind of like prepping me up before I step into my calling.
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
and character, hope.
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. – Romans 5: 3- 6
Yes, you will go through it too.
Before you go into your purpose you need to be pruned. If God has set a purpose for you He will also prune you and prep you up and provide you with all the necessitates you need as you walk into your purpose.
For those God foreknew, He also predestined …….
And those He predestined He also called; those He called He also justified; those He justified He also glorified. – Romans 8:29-30
And you cannot be developed in any other way than facing discomfort and difficulty.
If you haven’t understood I will give you an example, when an athlete prepares for a marathon He undergoes rigorous training, ask him he will tell you how ugly the training is. It is not only difficult it causes injuries and discomfort and wears him out but in the end the athlete knows he needs to go through this difficulty of rigorous training if he wants to come out successful and be of value and inspiration for others.
God does the same.
Gods training ground; well, it’s horrible. Its hard. Its painful. Its uncomfortable. Its crazy. But it is always always for the best. So you come forth as gold!
But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. – Job 23:10
God Himself will mold your character to shun the darkness and bring out the light in you. Then He will use you to spread this light to others.
Now He doesn’t really “need you” to spread His light but He has “chosen YOU”. He wants to fulfill His purposes through you.
So don’t block Him.
Allow Him to work through you.
He has given you free will so He wont meddle with your choice unless you ask Him to. All He wants from you is a willing heart.
But, I’m a sinner. I’m not even capable
But what about my sins I ask.
But I’m not that strong I say.
I’m not capable enough I claim.
Well, God knows everything about me so no worries there.
No amount of brokenness in you or weakness or sins can take away what God can do through you.
Moses was a murderer,
David was an adulterer,
Paul was a blasphemer,
Peter was a denier,
Thomas was a doubter,
Rahab was a prostitute,
…yet through all of them God achieved great things .
Actually, really great and amazing things that went down into history and today they are our heroes. Not because of who ‘they are’ but because of what God did through them.
Their brokenness did not stop Him from choosing them and allowing His grace to flow to them and spreading His light through them. In fact, only in your weakness will you see God’s power that will eventually make you strong.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. – 2 Corinthians 12: 9 – 10
This doesn’t give you a license to sin or continue in a sin that you very well know not to commit. Don’t get me wrong. But I’m just saying if you have sinned and don’t feel worthy it is not for you to say if you are to be useful or not for God; its God’s right to judge you and use you regardless of your weakness.
So, what exactly is my purpose?
My ultimate purpose will always be for spreading the light God placed in my heart to others as well; benefiting others, loving others, caring for others.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. – 1 Peter 2 : 9
Now God uses unique ways to spread that light.
He gives a person his unique fingerprint to show them that their purpose is as unique as their fingerprint.
You may feel called to be a doctor or civil servant or an actor or a blogger or an artist or a model or a plumber or an entrepreneur or baker or a teacher or maybe a mix of two or mix of three or even a mix of all. You know God is creative that way!
He knows what you are who you are and what He can do through you.
Joseph (son of Jacob) was a slave who went on to become imprisoned and finally became a governor.
David was a musician, poet, sheep herder and finally became a king.
Paul was a writer and preacher.
Peter was a fisherman before He became a disciple and later on became an evangelist.
Jesus was a carpenter before He began to preach.
Sometimes your calling may finally come after many stages. You may be in one profession today and in another tomorrow before you eventually are meant to carry out your purpose or realize what it even is.
No matter what your purpose in life is, know this, it is always for God’s glory. Your purpose is never for you to be great it is and will always be for serving and helping others and for glorifying God. So do not be ashamed or scared to fulfill what He placed in your heart.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5 : 15 – 16
However, if you try to achieve selfish gain, that is serving only for your benefit, then you are always going to keep stumbling; because, this is I know, that God always wants us to lift another.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. – Philippians 2 : 3 – 4
He created me for you and you for me. That’s pretty much how He rolls.
Don’t trust me? Well, sooner or later you are going find that out yourself.
Jesus came to earth, not for fame or power or for proving self-worth; He came to sacrifice for you and me. Well, I know, I know, we are no Jesus, but God is always conforming us into Christ’s image so that means He wants us to put other’s needs above our own.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them – Ephesians 2:10
You know how they say,
“If your passion meets what the world needs then you have found your purpose”
See, “world’s needs”. Yea, that’s where your purpose lies, in fulfilling other’s needs; not in money, fame or power.
Benefits of walking in your purpose
When you walk in your purpose, according to God’s will for you, then you are bound to enjoy all the blessings that accompany it.
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. – 2Corinthians 9: 7-8
That’s why those who find their purpose are satisfied, because they take care to fulfill another’s need selflessly.
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” – Luke 6 :38
When you walk according to God’s will for your life, you will enjoy the peace, joy, satisfaction that nothing this world can ever give you.
He will also bless you with riches and prosperity more than you can ask or imagine. He will bless every area of your life unlike when you try to provide for yourself and when you focus on one every area of your life, the other area suffers.
God includes all your needs. Who knows how to take care of creation other than the Creator Himself?
Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing
for the man who fears the Lord. – Psalm 128 : 1 – 4
He has riches stored up just for you. But these are riches that will satisfy you completely unlike you trying to provide for yourself and later may find it all to be meaningless if you have to ultimately spend it for hospital bills or may not have your family around to enjoy it with.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice. – Psalm 112: 1 – 5
I would love to hear from you. We learn from each other. I can never advice or help myself. I need you to help me. It would be really kind of you to leave any comment regarding how you may have found your purpose or how God intervened in your life or how the Spirit revealed things in your life that you were never earlier aware of. It will help me as well as others in our journey of life.
Thanks in advance guys!
Love, prayers & hugs,
